Mandala and roses on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala sits at the centre of the design, with two roses above and to the right of it and a leaf between them. Fine linework outlines the petals and rings, and stippled dotwork fills the shading in the mandala and the lower panels. The tattoo is in black ink and grey tones on pale skin, and the design fills the thigh from the upper leg down to a point near the knee.

Ida had been told twice to stop fussing over the centre panel, but the mandala on the cart would not close itself. Her father had taught her to start from the middle and work outwards, rings inside rings, the way you would unpick a knot. The fair was paid for in advance, so the lorry would leave at six whether the paint was dry or not.

She dotted the shading with the tip of a quill, one stipple at a time, while the generator coughed behind the dodgems. Above her, the two roses she had painted the night before looked back with their dark-edged petals, one fat and open, the other still shy at the side. Someone had once told her roses were easy because everybody knew what they looked like. Ida thought they were the hardest thing in the world for the same reason.
Dusk came on. The lads began to strike the lights. Ida tilted her lamp until the lines caught, and found a leaf she had forgotten, tucked between the blooms like a note slipped under a door. She added the fine black veins, then sat back on the cold step and waited for the paint to set. When Mr Corran came round with the cash box at dawn, he stopped in front of the cart, took off his cap, and said nothing at all, which from him was the finest thing she had ever been paid for.
