Double line band on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two thin, parallel black lines encircle the forearm, creating a band-like design across the middle of the arm. The linework is crisp and even, with no shading, and the lines sit close together. The image is in black and grey, with the skin tone and soft background dominating the frame.

The stencil kept lifting in the wind off the Tyne, so Ada Penhallow pinned its corner with her knee and drew the first line in one long stroke. The second mate read the tape from the rail and called the numbers down to her in the flat voice he used for everything, the weather included. Two lines, a finger's width apart, were all the Calder Bay carried on her side. Everything else on the hull was rust or grey.

"What's the second one for?" asked the cook's boy, who had come up from the galley with a mug of tea nobody had asked for. "Tropics," Ada said. "Warm water is lighter than cold. She sits higher in it, so you're allowed to load her deeper in the north and still have her freeboard going south." She had explained it three times since Gravesend, and each time the boy looked at the hull as though it had lied to him.
They painted through the Bay of Biscay in a grey sea that took the paint off faster than they could lay it on. Ada worked the brush in the lee of the funnel, redoing the upper line whenever spray lifted it. Somewhere past the Canaries the air softened and the sea turned the colour of weak tea, and when the chief officer checked the marks against the cargo he found her sitting exactly where the figures said, with nothing to spare.
Off Montevideo, Ada leaned over the rail with the tape in her hand and found the water just under the upper line, close enough to touch with a wet brush. She capped the paint and left the brush to dry on the rail, its bristles bent toward the wake, the two lines already running pale and even along the black hull as if they had always been there.
