I have something to tell you and I am going to say it plainly before I lose my nerve. The lad who carries the coal up the back stairs, Tomasz, has been walking out with Edie from the laundry since Whitsun. Last Sunday they came down to the shingle with two thin lengths of blue thread, and they tied them round each other's fingers while the tide came in over their shoes. Thread, Marjorie, not rings. Edie says rings cost money and thread only costs an afternoon. Then Tomasz went to the tobacconist on the front and had the same two lines inked on him by a man with a cough and a lamp, and Edie had hers done the next morning, so they are both marked now and neither of them is sorry.

I watched them hold their hands up against the window of the dining room this evening, palm to palm, so the blue lines lined up like the rules in a ledger. Mrs Pryce said it looked like a bet. I said it looked like a promise that had been properly paid for.

Come back at the end of the month. The sea is still grey and the chips are still greasy, and I want you to see it before the summer boarders take the good room.
