A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week of August the Bramleys were coming down faster than anyone could gather them, and you stood at the foot of the old ladder with a wet sack over your shoulder, watching the light go copper through the grey trunks. Hal had left for the coast at dawn in the van, promising he'd be back by the weekend, and the orchard had gone quiet in the way it does when the loudest man in the valley is gone.

You still had the chart he'd drawn the spring they planted the rows, a compass rose inked in red and black on the back of an old ferry timetable. Every tree had a letter and a number. He said a proper orchard runs like a boat: you keep your bearings from the rows and let the wind tell you the rest. You had laughed at him. You stopped laughing in April, when the frost took the blossom off the north side and he sat on the back step with his cap in his hands, saying the rows were still true even if the fruit wasn't.

So you climbed the ladder to the top, where the highest bough sways over the lane, and picked the last Bramley he always left for the blackbirds. From up there you could see the church spire, the ridge where the road bends toward the sea, and the long dark line of the hedge he never finished. Turning the timetable over in your pocket, you found his handwriting in pencil: Stop counting the rows. Pick the one that's ripe.

You bit into the apple, sharp and cold, and the juice ran down your wrist. Then you came down slowly, set the sack in the grass, and waited for the van's headlights to turn in at the gate.
