Double wave design on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows two stacked wave motifs, each with curled ends, tattooed on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The linework is smooth and fairly bold, with soft blue shading inside the forms. The ink is a single blue tone on pale skin, and the design is centred in a plain, close-cropped frame.

Dear Tom,

The rain has been coming sideways off the Humber since Monday, and the market roof leaks above my stall like it has opinions. Mrs Abbott from the bakery lost a whole tray of Chelsea buns to it yesterday and blamed me for standing under the wrong bit of guttering. I didn't argue. Your mackerel is in the cold box with the cracked lid, packed the way you showed me, though the ice man charges more every time he comes.

Dad's boat was in the basin when I walked past this morning. They've painted the hull again, a grey so pale it looks like it's been left out in weather, and the pair of waves you always drew on the wheelhouse door have gone under it. I stood on the quay for a while anyway, looking at where they used to be, the curled tops like the foam that hangs off a breaker just before it goes over.

The letter from the company came. I haven't opened it. It's on the windowsill under the teapot, and I'd rather you were here when I did. Write back soon and tell me what the sea's doing out past the Dogger. I know you can't say much, but tell me anyway.

Love, Nell
