Edison light bulb on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A single vintage light bulb with a glowing teal glass body, a looping filament and a blue-grey screw base is centred on the upper back. The linework is fine and dark, with soft shading on the glass and highlights along the top of the bulb. The plain skin and green fabric in the background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Gather round, and mind the rope, because the generator has a temper and wants its supper. Forty years I have walked behind the Halloran Brothers' fair, and in all that time there was one bulb on the Ferris wheel that nobody dared touch. Old Mags Penrose hung it there herself the summer the wheel first came over from Hull. Teal glass, she called it, though the colour came from a bottle of cough syrup she had poured into the mould for a dare. The filament inside looped like a bit of wire a child had bent while thinking about something else.

The trouble began in the August of the drought, when the river at Shelford dropped so low you could walk across it in your boots. The brothers wanted the lights switched off to save the diesel. Mags climbed the ladder at dusk, unscrewed that bulb and held it up to the sky. It threw a pale green circle onto the cobbles, and every child in the field came running to stand inside it. Nobody could say why. The grown men stood at the edge, squinting, and not one of them stepped in.

So the lights stayed on, and the fair ran another month on that one bulb's worth of trouble. When the rain finally came, the brothers found the wire gone to a glowing thread, bright as a sewing needle, and the glass still warm in your palm. Mags had packed it in a tin of cotton wool and gone. Some say she is still on the road with it. Some say she sold it to a man in Leeds for a cup of tea. I say that if you ever see teal light sliding across a wet field at dusk, you should step into it, because that is her way of asking you to remember.
