Light bulb with a brain inside
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A light bulb outline contains a detailed brain at the top and a glowing filament with a small support stem below it. The bulb and brain are built from fine stippled dots and clean black outlines, with light shading that gives the glass and folds of the brain some depth. The design sits centrally on smooth skin against a dark, blurred background, and the ink is entirely black and grey.

The corridor lights on Ward Seven hum at a pitch you stopped hearing years ago, until the fourth tube in a row gives up and the dark arrives all at once. You kneel on the lino with the drugs trolley squeaking away towards the lifts and dig a spare bulb from the pocket of your overalls. Down in bay three a buzzer keeps going, patient as a drip.

Night maintenance is mostly small faults and small fixes, and nobody thanks you for them, because nobody notices a light until it isn't there. Sister Pearl leaves a flask on the desk each shift with a note in capitals. Tonight it reads ONE OF THESE IS YOUR FAULT, and you suspect she means the wiring, not the staff, though with Pearl you never can tell.
You climb the step ladder to the panel above the nurses' station. The old bulb is still warm when you twist it free, and through the glass you can see the filament glowing thin as a held breath, its little support stem bent like a coat hanger. An old electrician once told you the brain is just a lamp nobody ever wired properly. You thought he was being clever. Standing there with the new bulb in your palm, you are not so sure.
When the corridor floods back to yellow, Pearl looks up and nods, which from her counts as applause. On the way out you stop at bay three. Mrs Okafor is asleep with one hand open on the blanket, so you turn the bedside lamp down to a low glow before you go. The dead bulb rattles in your pocket all the way to the car park.
