Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Eeyore the donkey from Winnie the Pooh, drawn in a bold cartoon style with a black outline. His body is filled with blue-grey ink and his inner ears and muzzle are pink, with a small white flower and green stem by his mouth. The design sits on the side of the body, photographed close up with the lighting slightly uneven.

The donkey arrived on the same Tuesday my sweet peas came up, which I have since decided was no coincidence. He belonged to the farm over the hedge, though nobody there seemed to own him in any sense that counted. He was a grey, glum animal with ears like wet dock leaves, and his tail came off whenever he sat down on it. I found it in the compost heap in June, pinned to a scrap of baler twine, and hung it back on my gatepost out of pity.

What he wanted, it turned out, was a daisy. Not a sweet pea, and not a thistle, which he sniffed once and sneezed at. Every morning he was at the fence with his nose through the wire, and every morning I gave him one white daisy from the border. He took it with the care of a man carrying a full cup, held it at the corner of his mouth for a long while, looking at nothing, and only then chewed. My husband used to say he had better manners than most of the parish.

In August the sweet peas were cut and the border was bare, and I had nothing to give him. I stood at the wire feeling foolish. He looked at me the way he looked at everything, as if it had let him down in advance, then walked off with his head low. I did not see him for three days.

On the fourth morning the tail was hanging from my gatepost again, freshly pinned, and tucked through its bow was one white daisy with the stem still wet. I have no idea where he found it, and I have stopped asking. I still hang the tail up when it falls, and he still comes for his flower, and neither of us has said a word about it.
