Black cat with pink watercolour splashes on a shoulder blade

Back · Mixed · Photo

A seated black cat in profile with a small yellow-green eye is the central subject, shaded in soft greys and black. Its lower body dissolves into loose magenta and pink watercolour washes with scattered red droplets around the edges. The design sits on the upper back beside the shoulder blade, with a plain black top visible at the edge of the frame.

The truck died at the crossroads twenty miles short of Harrow Wells, and the driver, a man called Efrain Coyle, sat on the running board and cursed the sun for another hour before he noticed the cat.

It was seated on the signpost, black as a stove lid, watching him with one green-yellow eye. The rest of it was going pink. Where the evening light came off the sand, the cat's back and haunches ran into the colour like wet ink dragged across cloth, and red specks hung in the air around it as if somebody had flicked a loaded brush. Efrain told it he had no milk. The cat did not care. Each time he looked away and back, it had turned a little further toward the west.

His grandmother used to say the cat at the crossroads belonged to the dust. It came out when the wind had blown three days, sat on whatever post stood nearest the road, and waited for the one traveller who had forgotten how to stop. Efrain laughed at that. He laughed less when the cat stood, stretched, and walked straight off the edge of the tarmac into the sunset, its colour thinning behind it until only the eye was left, bobbing low over the sand.

A cloud came over the ridge at dusk, the first in four years. Efrain's engine coughed back to life. On the road ahead, scattered in the wet, lay a line of small red drops, bright as pomegranate seed, and he followed them all the way into town without once looking back at the post.
