Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a figure sitting on the lower curve of a crescent moon. The moon is shaded in soft blue tones with lighter speckled highlights, and three small pink four-pointed stars sit beside the figure. The design is small and centred on a pale patch of skin against dark fabric.

The miller's daughter at Hollin Ford had been promised to the widower from across the water before the first frost, and she did not want him. Her mother said the matter was settled. Her father said the mill needed a man who could lift sacks. So on the eve of the wedding she climbed the old ash behind the sluice, the one whose lower branches gave out over the lade, and sat there until the moon came up over the weir.

The moon was thin that night, a crescent no wider than a sickle, and she could see its blue lying on the water like cloth laid out to dry. Her grandmother had told her that the moon kept a seat for anyone who asked properly. So she asked, and she sat down on the lower curve as though it were a bench at a fair. The loose stars came drifting over to see who had climbed so high.
Nobody in the village saw her go. The widower waited at the chapel gate with his hat in his hands until the bell had rung three times. Then the miller's wife went up the ash path with a lantern and found three pink sparks caught in the bark, and nothing else.
Some say she is still up there, swinging her heels over the blue edge while the moon wanes and fills. Others say she came down at the next new moon, married a boatman from the far bank, and kept a lantern lit in the window every night for forty years. The ash is still standing. Couples who climb it at the turn of the month are told to bring something the moon will want to keep.
