Egyptian cat with ankh and scarab on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic Siamese style cat sits upright at the centre of the design, with an ankh above its head and an ornate Egyptian winged collar framing its body. The cat's face and fur are rendered with soft grey shading and fine whisker detail, while the collar uses dense dotwork and bold black linework. The piece is entirely black and grey ink, set on skin with some redness around it.

Tuesday, 3.10 a.m. Ward 7 at St Aldred's is quiet except for the drip pumps and the cat, who has been sitting on the nurses' station since midnight as if she were on the rota. Nobody admits to feeding her. Dennis on the porters' desk swears she came up in the laundry trolley and has never once been carried out.

She is a Siamese, sleek and dark at the ears and paws, and she sits so upright that the lamp above her seems to be shining on purpose. Her collar of beads and wings sits on her chest like something borrowed from a museum case. When I counted the obs for bay two she watched every number I wrote, and when I finished she yawned, very slowly, as if she had been waiting for me to get them right.
At four, the buzzer went for bed nine. Mr Pell had been frightened all evening and kept asking for a nurse who would stay. I went in, adjusted his pillow, and came back out to find the cat sitting outside his door, facing it, tail curled round her feet. She did not move when the call bell rang again or when his daughter arrived with her coat still on. She stayed there until the sky over the car park turned grey and his breathing settled into something I could chart as stable.
Dennis says she is an Egyptian sort of cat, the kind that used to guard houses against bad luck. I told him the ward has plenty of bad luck already and she is welcome to it. I've started calling her Hetty, which he says is an insult to royalty. I think she can take it.
