Geometric cat face on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cat or lynx face sits at the centre, framed by a large triangle and a circle joined by dashed guide lines, with a small cross below. The linework is crisp and the fur and facial features are shaded with fine stippled dots. The tattoo is done in black ink on pale skin, with the design filling the forearm from elbow to wrist.

The snow had buried the lower windows of the Hollin Gate by the second morning, and Edie Marrow had given up on the road. She sat at the long table with her dividers and a sheet of tracing paper, trying to fix the valley the way her father had taught her, by drawing one circle inside another until the land made sense. The landlord's grey cat watched from the sill, ears flat against the draught, as if it disapproved of the arithmetic.

"You'll wear the nib down," said Tom Harle, setting a tankard by her elbow. He nodded at the sheet. "Triangle, circle, and that line between. Is that the church?" She said it was the ridge, and that the cross at the bottom was where the drove road met the beck. He laughed and said nobody had called the beck that in forty years.

Lynx, she thought the cat was, when she finally looked properly: tufted ears, a face set in dots of shadow like frost on glass. She had been drawing it without meaning to, its eyes sitting in the centre of her triangle. Tom said the old lynx had lived on these fells before the sheep, and that a man could still find its tracks above the wall if he knew where to look.

Next morning the plough came through at seven. Edie walked out to the gate and found, pressed into the new snow, a line of prints climbing the slope in neat, broken stitches, each one exactly on the path she had drawn. The cat's, or something's. She folded the tracing paper into her coat, where the dividers had left a small dark point on her thumb.
