Small tattoo on the inside of a wrist with an Eiffel Tower in place of the A in Paris, a red heart and black script lettering.

Eiffel Tower Paris heart on a wrist

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo on the inside of a wrist reads Paris in black script, with a grey Eiffel Tower replacing the letter A. A solid red heart sits above and to the right of the word. The linework is clean and the image is shot straight on against a grey patterned background.

Dear Matthieu,

The sign over the kiosk finally gave way in the wind on Tuesday, so I have spent three evenings with Gérard's old brushes trying to match his lettering. You would laugh. The A is still the tower, because he drew it that way the summer he was too drunk to remember how a proper A goes, and I never had the nerve to correct him, even now he is in Nice with his sister.

Yesterday a man from Sheffield stood in front of the stall for a full ten minutes, holding a postcard of the Seine with the same expression people wear in churches. He bought three. Then he asked why the heart was red when the letters were black, and I told him the truth, that red is the only colour the rain cannot wash out of a poster. He laughed as if I had made a joke. Then he said his wife had left him for a man who sold insurance in Toulouse, and he had come to Paris to be somewhere she had never been.

I did not know what to say to that, so I wrapped the postcards in tissue paper and gave him a pencil with the tower printed on it. He promised to send me a photograph of the view from his hotel. The hotel is nothing special, he admitted, but the window faces the river.

The sign is finished. The tower is a little crooked, as it always was. I think it looks better that way.
