Paris with Eiffel Tower and red heart on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo on the inner wrist of a hand held up to the camera. The design reads Paris, with a black Eiffel Tower drawn in place of the letter A and a solid red heart above the right-hand letters. The linework is clean and dark, with the red fill as the only colour, and the design sits centrally on the wrist against a grey, patterned background.

The snow had sealed the lane since Tuesday, so when the post finally came up on Derek's quad, wrapped in a feed sack against the sleet, I took the bundle at the gate without asking what else was in it. One envelope was a feed bill. The other was a postcard with a French stamp and my brother's handwriting gone loopy with cold. The picture was the Eiffel Tower, all iron lace against a sky the colour of weak tea.

Dad had never let either of us go further than the sale ring at Skipton. Tom went anyway, eleven years ago, with a rucksack and a promise to send for me. The card was his first in four years. He'd written only three lines: Still here, still soft on the cheese, and then, pressed in beside the word Paris, a red heart he must have coloured in with the biro running dry.

I read it again in the lambing shed with the lamp hung on its hook and the ewes steaming in the straw. Dad's old cap was still on the nail by the door, where it had been since the funeral. I put the card in my coat, then took it out and pinned it to the beam above the feed bins where I'd see it every time I counted the flock.

By Thursday the lane had opened. I drove the Land Rover to the station with the card in my pocket and the savings tin rattling in the glovebox. Somewhere past Settle I realised I had no idea which street Tom lived on, only the city, and that the card had come with no return address at all.
