Small outline heart on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple heart is drawn as a single black outline on the inner wrist, with the tail of a grey sleeve visible at the left edge. The linework is thin and even, and the interior of the heart is left as bare skin with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a soft, slightly blurred background of a car interior.

The charcoal had burned down to a stub the size of a fingernail, so Ruhi held it the way her grandmother had taught her, close to the knuckle, and drew the first curve on the whitewashed wall beside the door. Her hand did not shake. It had not shaken since the boats came in without Tariq's among them.

The old men at the well said a heart drawn on stone holds a name, and that a name left outside its heart will wander. Ruhi did not believe the well-talk. She drew the second curve, met the first at the point, and stopped, because the custom was to fill the shape with the thing you were keeping, and she had nothing to put there that the river had not already taken.
Her neighbour Sefa came by with bread and watched the outline go up without comment. When the lines closed, Sefa asked why the middle was empty. Ruhi wiped her fingers on her apron. 'Because he is not finished being out,' she said, and Sefa, who had buried two husbands, did not argue.
That winter the wall grew damp and the whitewash flaked, but the heart held its line. Ruhi left the bare plaster inside it. Every evening she pressed her palm into that open space, cold and rough, and went in to bank the fire, leaving the door on the latch.
