Small fine line tattoo on the inner wrist reading Paris, with the Eiffel Tower forming the A and a solid red heart beside the word.

Paris with Eiffel Tower and red heart on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo reads Paris in a mix of serif and script lettering, with a detailed Eiffel Tower drawn in fine black lines forming the letter A. A solid red heart sits to the upper right of the word. The black elements are in soft grey-black tones, and the red heart is the only colour, set against pale skin with a blurred background.

Now, you want to know how Ada Okonedo came by her Paris, and I'll tell it the way my grandmother told it to me, perched on the edge of the bath with the taps dripping. Fourteen floors up on the Sorrel Court estate, the lift broke every other Tuesday, and Ada was the only one who climbed the stairs without complaint, counting the landings in French because she'd learned the numbers from a cassette bought at a car boot sale.

Every evening from her kitchen window she could see the top of the mast on the bus depot, and she swore to anyone who'd listen that if you squinted past the cranes it looked like the iron lady standing up for herself. Her husband Clement, a bus driver with a laugh like a dropped tray, said a steel pylon could be anywhere but Walthamstow, and she told him to mind his own bread.

Then came the winter the damp got into the walls and she sold the good saucepans to pay the gas. With the last fiver she bought a red felt-tip and a library book of Parisian street maps. Clement found her at the table at midnight, sketching a tower in fine black lines, then sliding a letter A out of its legs and a little red heart beside it for good measure.

In the morning she taped the drawing to the window, lined it up with the mast over the depot, and said, 'There. Now the bus depot has to answer to me.' Clement still says that was the most romantic thing he ever saw, and he says it every time the lift breaks.
