Elephant holding a heart balloon on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon-style grey elephant reaches up to hold a pink heart-shaped balloon on a thin black string. The elephant is outlined in black with soft grey shading, and the heart and the elephant's cheek have pink wash. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner wrist against a plain background.

The balloon got away on the third morning, and Mrs Garside said it was the wind's fault and not mine, which was kind of her, though I still felt the string burn through my fingers as it went.

It was a heart, pink as the inside of a shell, bought from Mr Oddy's stall on the pier for a penny I had saved since Whitsun. I had tied it to Nelson, my grey felt elephant with the cheek rubbed pale from years of being kissed. Nelson lifted his trunk over the harbour wall, the balloon bobbed up beside him, and then a gust off the bay came across the groyne and took it straight out over the rocks, the string snapping through my hand.

I ran the length of the wall after it until the stones turned slippery and the tide began to make. A fisherman mending a net without looking up told me balloons were like gulls, they went wherever the air was kind and never said goodbye to anybody. Then I saw it caught on our chimney pot, the string hooked round the clay, the heart turning slowly against a sky the colour of dishwater.

Mrs Garside let me up through the attic with the broom, and I climbed out of the skylight with Nelson stuffed inside my cardigan. This time I tied the string not to my wrist but to his trunk, knotted it twice, and set him on the slates. He stood there holding the heart up toward the gulls, as steady as a lighthouse, and nobody on the promenade below could have told you which of us was keeping watch.
