Small Hello Kitty tattoo on inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A small Hello Kitty cat face is outlined in black on the inner wrist, with a red bow above the head, a yellow nose and red whiskers. The linework is clean and even, and the flat fills give it a simple cartoon look. The tattoo sits centrally on the wrist, with the raised hand and red nail polish filling the frame against a purple backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bow came loose during the lifeboat parade, and Gwen Pardoe spent the whole of Tuesday on her knees on the boards of Pennick Sands pier looking for it. The costume head was too big and its whiskers were stiff as bent wire, and by lunchtime two toddlers had mistaken the mascot for a gull and tried to feed it chips.

Alfie Tranter, who sold ninety-nine cones from a tricycle by the slipway, said he had seen a gull fly off with something red. They followed it up the harbour wall to a heap of crab pots, where the bird dropped the bow into a tangle of rope and gave them a look of deep contempt. Gwen climbed over the pots in the cat head, muttering through the felt mouth that she had been a respectable usherette once, and Alfie held the rope steady while she worked the bow free.

When she handed it back to him to hold, he asked whether the cat was real. She said no, it was only her inside, and he considered this seriously while licking a drip of raspberry sauce from his thumb. Then he said he liked her better without the face, because she was easier to talk to when she couldn't be looked at. She laughed so hard the head slipped sideways, and she had to hold it on with one hand all the way back along the pier.

At the end of the day she pinned the bow back onto the cardboard ear, and the wind came off the sea and flattened the whiskers against the cheeks. The cat looked, for once, as if it had been waiting all afternoon for someone to come and find it.
