Cartoon tooth with pink bow on wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a cartoon tooth with a simple face, drawn with a dark outline and a pale cream fill. A pink bow sits on one side of the tooth, with the colour applied flatly inside its outline. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist, photographed against a plain carpeted floor.

Dear Mrs Pemberton-Hughes,

I am writing about the bow. You will remember that when Ruby's milk tooth came out on the Tuesday, she tied a pink ribbon round my middle with a length of her mother's sewing thread, because she said a tooth going out into the wide world ought to look its best. I did not ask for it. Nobody asks a molar.

Still, I was carried to the bedroom windowsill in a lemon yoghurt pot, and the bow held. For three nights I sat beside the bedside clock and listened to the radiator tick. On the fourth morning a hand I did not recognise reached in and left a two pound coin, which I thought vulgar, but I forgave it.

The real trouble is what happened next. The fairy from the next street, a grumpy one called Dorothy, took one look at my bow and told the whole ledger I was showing off. Now I am filed under decorative, and I am not allowed in the cabinet with the proper teeth.

So I would like the ribbon removed, or at least a second opinion. Enclosed is a sketch of how I looked before the bow, drawn by a man who had never seen a tooth from the inside.

Yours with a perfectly good root, Tooth 14, upper left
