Matching plus and minus circle tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people hold hands so their inner wrists are side by side, each with a small circular tattoo. The left circle contains a minus sign and the right contains a plus sign, both drawn in thin black linework with no visible shading. The ink is black and grey, the background is an orange surface and dark clothing, and the close crop centres the two tattoos.

Dear Marjorie, the night shift at Calder Lane has been quiet since you left, which is the only mercy I can report. The backup battery room hums like a fridge full of bees, and I still check the racks the way you taught me: torch first, then gloves, then the little brass tags with their two words stamped in them, positive and negative. You always said the trick was never to let a spanner bridge them.

Last Tuesday a lad from the contractors, all elbows and apology, came down to fit a new cable run and wanted to know why we kept the two terminals so far apart. I told him what you told me, that opposites are safe as long as they stay in their own places. Then I went up for the kettle, and when I came back he was sitting on an upturned crate with his sleeves pushed up, looking pleased and terrified in equal measure, and his mate was holding the torch for him without being asked.
I keep thinking about the day the roof came in over the switch room, and how you reached across the cable trench and took my hand, and neither of us let go until the emergency lights flickered back on. Plus and minus, you said afterwards, that's all a current is: one side wanting to go somewhere the other can't follow, and both of them going anyway.
The new run is live now. I'm writing this at the desk with the monitor glowing green and a cup going cold beside me. Come up for a brew when you're next in Halifax. I've left the bulb on in the back room, the one that never quite blew, and you can tell me who has finally had the sense to marry whom.
