Elephant outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant is drawn as a single black outline with its trunk raised and one dot for an eye. The linework is even and thin, with no shading or fill, so the body remains the pale colour of the skin. The photograph is black and white and shows the tattoo centred on the skin with the edge of the foot visible below it.

The mule had gone lame on the fourth bend, so Anjali walked the last of the Sarra pass herself, leading the elephant calf by a rope of plaited goat hair. The calf was not hers. Its mother had died in the lowland fields the spring before, and the drover who brought it to the inn had left a sack of barley and a bad temper. Nobody in the valley would take it. Nobody could say what it ate.

Snow came sideways over the ridge. The calf stopped at every cairn and lifted its trunk, swinging the grey tip slowly from side to side as though tasting the air. Her father would have shouted at her to keep moving. Anjali had learned from the toll-keeper's wife that the pass remembered who crossed it and that the road was never the one you could see. She let the rope go slack and waited.
The calf turned off the track where there was no track, down a slope of loose stone, and the rope pulled taut again. Anjali slid after it on her heels, cursing the cold, until the wind dropped and she smelt woodsmoke and hay. Below them the inn's lamps were lit in a line along the river. She had not told anyone which way the stables faced. The calf had known.
At the bottom it pressed its trunk against the gatepost, once, the way a person might knock. Behind them the snow was already filling their tracks.
