The river came up through the lower wards of Samber every spring, and every spring the bridge-keepers fed their lamps with the last of the tallow and watched the steps. Old Marit Coll had kept the Tanners' Bridge for forty years. She could tell a flood by the smell of the mud before the water showed, and she could tell a child who had been told a tale by the way he stood.

On the night the thaw broke, she sat her grandson Pell on the bottom step and gave him the words her own mother had from a ferryman. They were old and crooked, the sort of words that wear smooth from being said over and over in the dark. Expecto patronum, she told him. It means I wait for a guardian. Say it to the water, not to the sky, and say it like you mean to be answered.
He said it at the turn of midnight with the lamp shaking in his fist. The river stood still at the third step. Then something grey and long came up out of the brown water and walked the length of the wall without touching the stone, and every lamp along the quay bent its flame toward it like barley in a wind. It went as far as the dyers' cellar doors and lay down across them, and the water slid back down the steps as if it had been called home.
In the morning the mark on the wall sat a hand's width below where the flood had reached. Marit was already chalking the words under the lintel, running uphill the way the river had gone. Pell asked her what the guardian had been. She wiped her hands on her apron. Something that waited for you, she said, the same as you waited for it.
