Eye and butterflies in a colourful honeycomb
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large eye with long lashes sits at the centre of a honeycomb pattern, with several more hexagons showing parts of other eyes and faces. Butterflies and soft, blended washes of pink, blue, green, orange and purple fill the cells, giving a watercolour-like effect. The design fills the forearm, with the honeycomb grid running across the whole composition.

Right, sit down, all of you, and stop checking your phones, because Mrs Pargeter is about to tell you what happened to the Ashdown girls the summer the bees went blind. You remember the hives behind the old vicarage wall? Everyone's grandad kept them, and the honey came in hexagon combs so neat you could have built a church out of them. Ruth Ashdown used to press her face to the wax and say she could see the whole parish through the cells, all at once, every window open.

Nobody believed her, of course. Then the summer of the heat came, and the fields went the colour of old pennies, and Ruth started painting. Not on paper. On the cellar door, on the backs of the milk bottles, on her own forearm with a bramble thorn dipped in her mother's indigo ink. She painted butterflies in every cell and a single eye at the centre, wet and green as a pond, and when the rain finally came she swore the eye had blinked.
Her mother said it was a lie to keep the village quiet. But Tom Hollis, who ran the post van and never told a lie in his life, swore he saw the cellar door open on its own that night, and inside, every hexagon of paint had colour running out of it, pink into blue, orange into purple, as if the whole house were weeping watercolour onto the flagstones.
So there you are. The bees went back to work, the eye stayed open, and if you walk past the vicarage wall on a warm evening, you will see a painted arm hanging over the gate, lashes flickering behind the comb. Now, who wants the next biscuit?
