Eye of Horus with dotwork mandala on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two side-by-side photographs show the same black tattoo of an Eye of Horus with a shaded iris inside a dotted circle. Below it, a triangular frame and a dotwork mandala with zigzag bands fill the lower section. Solid black outlines and stippled shading sit on pale skin, with the second photo taken from a slightly different angle.

Her brother had painted the eye onto the cab door years ago, a crude thing in enamel that the sun had nearly bleached away. He said it was for watching the traffic. She said it was for watching him, because he could never be trusted to lock the depot. The driver was a boy of nineteen who had run out of water and most of his nerve. She handed him the thermos. He asked why she had an eye painted on her truck, and she told him the truth: it kept the road honest. He laughed, then stopped, because she was already looking past him into the empty desert, counting lights that weren't there.
