Eye in a triangle on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded eye sits inside an inverted triangle, with two overlapping circles and dotted construction lines and arrows extending around and below it. The eye is rendered with fine linework and soft grey shading, while the geometric elements are drawn with thin, precise strokes. The image is a close photograph of the forearm against a plain light background, with only black ink and grey tones.

Mind the tiller, Sal, the cut bends hard under Hob's Bridge, and I'm not telling this twice. Old Abel Vane kept a brass sighting glass in his waistcoat, round as a bottle top, with a single eye scratched in the middle of it. He had it from a surveyor who drowned in the Trent, so he said, though Abel said most things.

He used that glass to read the rise of the locks. He'd sight through it to three marker posts set in a triangle on the towpath, then lay two rings of old rope in the grass for circles. In his ledger he drew dotted lines from the glass to the water, with arrows showing which way a lost boat would drift. Every line he drew was a way of working out where a thing would end up.
Then came the February flood. It lifted over Fenny Lock in the dark and tore the Constance off her mooring. Abel sat in the cabin with the glass at his eye, sighting along his own arrows, and shouted the bearings out of the hatch. The lads ran the towpath calling numbers back and forth across the black water, and they hauled her into the reeds at the bend where his dotted line said she'd fetch up. She did, bang on.
So when you see one of those drawings, don't look at the eye first. Look where the arrows point. Now get that pole up, the lock's filling.
