The net had hung over the chart table since Gdansk, and by the fourth week of the crossing nobody aboard the Corinna Vale thought to ask why. Second mate Ilse Brandt kept it there for the sake of the eye at its centre, a blue glass lens salvaged from a wrecked lighthouse lamp, which she claimed watched the horizon while she slept.

The sea lay flat as pewter. Stars slid across it like fish turning under ice.

Ilse found him there at two bells, the brass medallion swinging from his fist, a compass cover he had polished for a week. 'It doesn't catch dreams,' she said. 'It catches whatever you're too tired to let go of, then gives it back in the morning.' He worked one of the feathers loose, grey and soft as a moth's wing, and held it out over the rail.

She did not stop him. The feather turned once in the lamplight and was gone. By the time the sun came up pink over the swell, the cord was threaded back through the lens, and the boy was asleep on a coil of rope with the medallion tucked under his chin.
