Nobody on Carrick Street had seen Edith Lowe's shutter come down before eleven, so when the bell over the door rang at ten to nine on a wet Thursday, Tomasz looked up from the brass scales with the face of a man expecting a bailiff. The customer was an old man in a green cardigan, holding a cedar box no longer than a loaf. Its lid had a painted eye on it, the lids drawn heavy and black, the pupil a dark almond. 'My father carried this out of Alexandria in 1956,' he said. 'I need it to go to someone who won't put it in a drawer.'

Tomasz offered forty pounds, then sixty, because the wood was good and the old man's hands were not steady on the counter. The man shook his head and asked only that the box be kept open on the shelf facing the street. He would not say why. When the bell rang again he was gone, and the rain had turned the pavement into a mirror full of broken streetlight.
That night Tomasz could not sleep. He went back to the shop at midnight, found the lamp in the window still burning from habit, and saw that the lid, which had been shut all evening, now stood open a finger's width. Inside, folded small, was a sheet of paper in careful blue ink: Leave the lamp on for whoever walks home late.
He hung the box on a nail beside the door, the eye turned to the street. Every night since, he has taken the long way home past the shop, and every night the lamp is lit.
