Eye tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A simple eye design with an almond-shaped outline, a round iris and a solid black pupil, surrounded by short radiating lines above and below. The lines are bold, even and fully black, with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centrally on one finger, with the rest of the hand and fingers softly lit against a light blue textured surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tonks painted the eye on the bow the spring before I came aboard, and I told him it was daft. A boat doesn't need a face, I said. He wiped his brush on his trousers and said the sea had eyes enough, and the Gannet Mary had better keep one of her own.

Eight rays above, eight below, fanning out from the almond of it like a gull's wings folded flat. The black lead had gone grey by the second summer and the ochre had bled into the grain, but he never let me touch it. A man who paints his own eye on a boat should know how to see the swell coming, he said.

The squall came in off the Lizard on a Thursday in October, the fleet strung out and blind in the rain. I couldn't see the light at Porthkerrow, couldn't see my own hands on the tiller. Then the lantern caught the bow and there it was, the eye, its lines pointing exactly where the water was heaving. I put her head into the seas the rays pointed at, and we came through with the gunwale awash and nothing lost but a bucket.

Tonks went in the March after, a chest that gave up in his sleep. I hold the brush now. Last week I scraped the old paint back to bare wood, mixed lead with linseed on a scrap of tailboard, and drew the eye again. Then I counted the rays twice, eight and eight, the way he taught me, before I let the boat back in the water.
