Geometric diamond linework on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style tattoo of nested and overlapping diamond shapes, with a smaller diamond at the lower end and a dotted arc beside it. The lines are thin and even, drawn in solid black ink with no shading, and the design sits centrally on a pale forearm against a light grey background.

Brother Anselm had cut forty panes for the east window before the abbot admitted that the fifth one was wrong. "It leans," said Abbot Corvin, holding it up to the grey light off the snow. Anselm did not argue. He took the lead came back to his bench, laid out a kite shape on the oak, then a second diamond inside it turned a little askew, then a third inside that, until the sheet looked like a kite caught in its own string. The novice Tomas watched him work and asked why the diamonds would not sit square. Anselm said that light does not sit square either, and went on cutting.

All that winter the boy pricked small holes into the plaster of the chapter wall, one at a time, where the low sun touched the stones at noon. Anselm measured the arc they made with a knotted cord and found it was the same length as the rope that hung the lamp. "Dots are only lines that have stopped to think," Tomas said, and Anselm, who was tired, laughed at him and then could not stop thinking about it.
The window was set on the feast of Candlemas. When the sun came over the ridge, the nested diamonds threw their shadows across the chapter floor in overlapping kites, and the smallest diamond at the bottom of the frame cast a point of light exactly onto the lamp hook. Corvin stood under it and said nothing for a long while. Afterwards Tomas went to the wall with his awl and counted the dots he had made. There were twelve, one for each brother who had walked out through the gate that year, and none of them had been meant to be lost.
