Small outline lotus on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower drawn in a single black outline, with five or six pointed petals fanning out from a central base. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the black ink sits crisply on pale skin. The tattoo is placed near the centre of the frame, with plenty of empty skin around it against a dark background.

Mind the step, the lot of you, and sit down before I lose my breath. Where was I? Ah, the pond behind the mill. In my grandmother's day nothing grew in that water but reeds and frogspawn, and every girl in Calder Dale said the same thing: there was a flower under the weed that opened only once a year, white as a clean collar, and whoever picked it would be married before the frost.

Mabel Thwaite was the miller's youngest, and she had no patience for frost or for talk. She went out in a borrowed coracle at first light on midsummer morning with a slate and a stub of chalk in her apron. The flower was there, sitting on the black water like a folded hand. She did not pick it. She sat in that little boat for an hour and drew it instead, in one unbroken line, never lifting the chalk, so that every petal fanned out from the same starting point and came back to it. When she rowed home her hands were blue with cold, and the slate was the only thing she brought back.
They say she married the lad from the far farm that winter, though nobody could say which of the two of them had proposed. The slate hung above the hearth in their kitchen for fifty years. Nobody ever filled it in with colour. Her daughters used to say it looked finished as it was, and that was the whole point of it, wasn't it? Now, the cake. Who has seen the cake? Somebody fetch the cake.
