The boatmen of Vellan Reach would not put out until the tide-clerk had written their word on the slate, and on the morning the north wind came up grey over the harbour wall, the clerk was you. Your hand shook. Old Tamsin held the lantern steady and told you not to think about the storm, only the loop of the f and the long tail of the h.

You wrote it as you had been taught, without ever lifting the nib. The word ran in one continuous stroke, and then you drew the fish around it, starting at the little fin that caught the wind and curving down to the cross-stroke at the belly, which the fishermen said was for the bottom of the sea. Nobody in the kingdom could say why the fish had to be drawn in one breath. They only knew that a broken line let the water in.

The fleet went out at dawn with the slate lashed to the mast. You stood on the wall for three days, counting boats the way Tamsin had taught you to count stitches, until the seventh boat limped in with its sail in ribbons and the slate still whole. Tamsin unlashed it and found the ink unsmudged, the whole word as dark as the day you made it. She hung it on the gate, and you still walk past it, looking at the place where the pen first touched, the small tail of the fish pointing back towards the harbour as if it had come home.
