Black script lettering tattoo reading Faith on the inner wrist, with gold bracelets worn just below it.

Faith script on inner wrist

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand and wrist with the word Faith written in black script ink across the inner wrist. The lettering has a flowing hand-drawn look with varied stroke weight and a small loop beside the letters. Gold bracelets with beads and a ring charm sit below the tattoo, and the background is a pale, sparkly textured surface.

The seed tags were still in Nan's kitchen drawer when I got back from Leeds, held together with a perished elastic band. Every one was labelled in her looping pencil, the capitals leaning like people waiting for a bus. Runner beans. Sweet peas, the blue ones. And at the bottom of the pile, a packet with no picture, only a single word she had written and gone over twice: Faith.

I assumed it was a variety name. I took the packet down the garden on a Sunday, when the frost had gone off the lawn and the plot behind the shed was grey with last year's stalks. Mr Okonedo leaned over the fence and told me nothing grows in a hurry in March, which is exactly what she used to say, word for word, as if he had borrowed it from her.

I dug the bed she had marked with a bamboo cane and a loop of baler twine. Under the first spadeful of soil was a biscuit tin with a rusted lid. Inside lay a thin gold ring and a folded note: 'For when you stop waiting for the seeds to show.' Nothing else. I sat on an upturned bucket and laughed until I cried, because I had spent all winter waiting for her to tell me what the packet was for.

I sowed the whole thing in one neat row, pressed the soil flat with my thumbs, and wrote the word on a lolly stick in biro. It looks nothing like her hand. I tied the stick to the cane with the last of the light, and by May something green had pushed through the dark, and I no longer needed to know what it was.
