Faith script tattoo on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script tattoo reading Faith across the wrist, with a flowing capital F and a small star-shaped flourish above it. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with the letters sweeping into looping strokes that run up the arm. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, and the background shows a blurred grey car seat.

Dear Tomasz, the boat went out again on Tuesday without you, and Mrs Pargeter has taken to lighting a lamp in her front window every night as if you might come up the lane with your cap in your hand. I told her the lamp was for the men still at sea. She said that was exactly who she meant, and then she made me hold the ladder while she tried to reach the top shelf for the good tin of tea.

The sign-writer came over from Penzance on Thursday to repaint the chandlery board. He asked what word I wanted beneath the name, and I said only the one your father used to say when the glass dropped and the gulls came inland. He lettered it in gold leaf with a long F that curled back on itself like a fishing line, and then he stopped, dipped his brush, and set a small star above the word. He said a word that hopeful ought to have something to steer by.
The rain has been at the board all week and the gold has dulled at the edges, but the star is still bright where the sun catches it at four o'clock. Mrs Pargeter says it looks like a mistake, and I haven't told her it isn't.
If the wind turns and you can't see the harbour light, look for the star above the word instead. The lamp only tells you where we are. The star tells you which way to row.
