Family script and anchor on fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two fingers of a hand, with the word Family written in a flowing script across the top finger and a small anchor on the finger below it. The linework is solid and dark, with the ink appearing as black or deep navy and no other colours. The background is a soft-focus, pale room, keeping the attention on the fingers.

Dear Owen,

The bread has gone flat again, and I have blamed the damp, the flour, the oven and finally the Almighty, though Cook Hallam says it is only the sea wanting its share. Eleven days out of Hull and the galley smells of tar, onions and the tin of tea you sent. I have pinned your last letter above the range, where the steam keeps curling its corners. Mam's name is on the back in your handwriting, which I have not forgiven you for.

Yesterday the second mate caught his thumb in a block and I sewed it closed by lamplight while he swore at me in Norwegian. He asked what I had on my fingers. I told him the same as always: family across the top, and an anchor underneath for the one who keeps us from drifting. He laughed and said I had the look of a woman who ought to be hanging washing, not stitching men together. I said I had been told worse by better men.

The ship's bell is striking the middle watch now, and the cabin boy is asleep on the flour sacks with his boots still on. I have kept back a heel of yesterday's loaf for the trip home, wrapped in your old scarf so it does not get mouldy before I do.

When we dock I will walk up Fairfield Road with a proper loaf under my arm, one that has risen for once. Keep the kettle on, and tell Mam I am coming, though she will not believe it until she sees me.

Your sister, Nell
