Matching small anchor tattoos on two ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two pairs of legs and feet rest on white bedding, with a small black anchor tattoo on the ankle of each leg. The anchors have simple, thin outlines with solid black fill and sit close to the ankle bone. The warm-toned, close-up photograph keeps the focus on the two matching designs.

Nell had the boat's mooring rope in her hands before the flood came down the cut, and she did not let go of it when her brother shouted from the tiller. The barge Cormorant swung against the lock gate with a noise like a church bell struck wrong. Her father had always said an anchor holds a thing to the bottom of the world, and a rope holds it to the people who love it, and she had thought him soft until that night.

Tom came up the towpath with a lantern and a length of chain he had taken off the old lock keeper's gate. They knotted it through the iron ring on the bow. Nobody spoke. The water rose a hand's width against the brickwork, then stopped, as if it had been asked a question and decided to wait for the answer.
In the morning the river had gone brown and quiet. Tom went up to the boatyard at Hollin Cross that same day and came back with a small black anchor inked on his ankle, done for a penny less than the going rate because the tattooist had a soft spot for boatmen. Nell had the same mark done beside him. They had argued about it for a week, whether two anchors made a promise or a joke, and settled on neither. Her father laughed when he saw them and said the water would take whichever one of them stopped holding on.
Years later, the Cormorant rotted at her moorings and the chain was sold for scrap. Nell still walked the towpath in the evenings, and when she sat on the lock beam to rest with her feet over the cold water, she looked down at the small black hook on her skin and thought about who had been holding whom.
