Feather and eye design in white linework
Colour · Flash
A symmetrical design of five feathers fanning out beneath a stylised eye enclosed in a triangle, with an arrow rising from the apex. The feathers and motifs are drawn in fine cream lines with hatched shading on the quills and vanes. The design sits over a soft-focus background of pink flowers and dry grass in warm reddish tones.

Pass me that lamp, and mind the step, because the cabin floor has never once been level since your grandmother's kettle went through it. Now. You want the one about the grey heron and the woman who sold feathers at Stanwell Lock? Sit down. Sit.

Every spring the coal barges came up from Brentford, and the lock-keeper's wife, Ada Figg, bought the flight feathers off the herons that nested in the willows, five at a time, for a penny each. Nobody knew what she did with them. Some said she made fans for the chapel. Others said she was counting the birds. She had one eye that never quite closed, a pale eye that looked at the water even when she was looking at you.
One November a boy called Tom Tolley stole a whole bundle from her yard and rowed them out to the middle of the reach, meaning to sell them in Staines. The wind got under them. Five feathers rose off the boat like a hand opening, and the grey light above the water drew a sharp triangle around them, though I cannot tell you how the light manages that.
Ada never chased him. She only pointed at the sky, and Tom looked up and saw the feathers hanging there, fanned out over the reach, each quill drawn in lines as fine as frost. He rowed home that night without a single penny, and from then on he could not tell a lie without feeling that pale eye above his head.
