Now and then something arrives that makes me stop on the path with the bag digging into my shoulder.

That spring a parcel came for her, addressed in a hand I did not recognise, wrapped in brown paper and tied with waxed string. Inside was a single grey heron feather as long as my forearm, and beneath it a card with four words in pencil: keep it out of the rain. She turned the feather against the window and told me her husband had kept a wing like that pinned above the chart table for thirty years. The sender, she said, had sailed with him on the last trawler out of Scrabster, and had never once come back to see the harbour.

I walked back down past the gorse with the empty sack folded under my arm. Five hundred miles is a long way for a feather to travel without being crushed, which told me somebody had packed it with care, the way you would carry something you had promised to return.

At the gate she called after me. The feather was propped in the kitchen window now, catching the sun, and the card lay on the table where anyone could read it. Keep it out of the rain. It was not a request, she said. It was a map.
