Feather charm chain anklet tattoo

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle show a black and grey tattoo of a chain anklet with a small charm from which two feathers hang. The chain links and feather barbs are drawn with fine, shaded linework that gives the feathers some depth. The photo is taken from a slight angle against a wooden floor, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Nell, the silver chain came Thursday and I've fastened it on already, the little feather charm swinging whenever I cross the floor at the Palais. Mother says it looks like a pawnshop's idea of Indian jewellery. I told her the feathers came off your uncle's goose, which she didn't believe, and which I didn't either.

Saturday the hall was thick with smoke and the trumpet player kept dropping his mute. Between dances I stood by the cloakroom and watched the heels go round, and the feathers caught the lamplight, the one on the left slightly bent from the postal sack it rode in. A sailor asked my name three times. I gave him a different one each time, the way you taught me, and he seemed not to mind.

Then Mr Abbott from the ticket booth found me on the back stairs with the chain bunched in my fist. He said Miss Harte had been sacked for less, and that the new manager wants girls who keep their trinkets in their purses. I said I'd keep them where I liked. He sighed and went back down, and the band struck up a foxtrot I'd never heard, all sliding notes, like something coming loose from a hook.

So I'm writing from the dressing room with the window open onto the alley. The feathers are cool against the wrist of my hand where I've been turning the charm over. Come up on your half day, bring the tin of Lyons toffee, and wear something that rustles. I'll tell you the rest when I see you, and we'll find out whether Mr Abbott is still there to watch.
