Feather tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the inner wrist, drawn in fine black linework with soft grey shading along the quill and barbs. The feather is angled diagonally and sits on plain skin, with a metal chain bracelet and a turquoise bead visible at the left edge. The shading is delicate and the composition is simple, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Halfway up, where the path turns against the rock, a grey goose lay in the snow with one wing bent under it. It was not dead. Dorcas knelt, pulled the wing free, and felt how it had been broken at the joint. She had no splint, so she tied it to her own forearm with strips of her spare shirt and walked the rest of the climb with the goose tucked inside her coat, its heart knocking against her ribs like a second clock.
At the summit a wind came off the far side hard enough to lift the snow into sheets. The goose pulled loose and went up, and for a moment it hung above her, one long grey feather spinning down out of its wing and landing on the back of her hand. Dorcas blew on it. The feather stayed. She carried the mail down into the valley with that feather tucked under her cuff, and when the thaw came she found a needle-thin line of ink on the skin beneath it, which no one in the valley could explain, and which she never bothered to try.
