Feather tattoo on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with a black and grey feather tattoo along the side of one finger. The feather has fine linework and soft shading that gives the quill and barbs some depth. Two gold open rings with triangular clear stones sit on the neighbouring fingers against a dark background with gold speckles.

The sorting office smells of wet wool and the hot oil of the franking machine, and Mr Teague has already said twice that the afternoon post will be late. You don't mind. You have the letter from Lydia Marsh in your apron pocket, the one with a grey feather folded inside it like a bookmark, and you have not yet decided whether to tell anyone.

She writes the way she always has, in pencil that goes faint at the ends of the lines. The feather is from a jackdaw, she says, though you know it came from the wood behind the old mill, because she showed you the nest there the summer you were both twelve. Her husband has taken a job on the railway at Halsey Junction. She will not be back in Maddock Cross for the harvest supper, and she asks you to keep the key to the chapel vestry until she sends for it.
You stand at the counter for a long time with the stamp book open. Outside, the bell on the bakery door rings twice and nobody comes in. Then you slide the feather from the paper and hold it to the window, where the light passes through the barbs and turns their edges silver, every fine branch of it separate and still joined to the quill.
You post the letter that evening, unstamped, into the box at the end of the lane, and keep the feather. Some things, you tell yourself, should be carried rather than sent.
