Fine line feather on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is drawn in fine grey linework along the inner wrist and forearm, with its quill angled down towards the hand. The shading is light and fibrous, with the barbs built from many thin strokes that give the feather a soft, textured look. The photograph is black and white, with the fingers at the top edge and a wooden surface behind the arm.

The envelope arrives on a Tuesday with no return address, only a Grimsby postmark and your name in pencil, pressed so hard the letters have dented the paper. You open it at the sorting table while Mr Pell argues with the kettle, and a single grey feather slides out onto the wood, barred fine as a comb, its quill still faintly warm from somebody's pocket.

Your brother Tom went north on the Ruby Cole in March and has not written since, so you know his hand from the back of a ration book. This is not his hand. Folded behind the feather is a single line: Ask Mrs Adair what the gulls were doing on the quay the night before they sailed. The feather has been trimmed clean at the base with a knife, the way a fletcher would do it, and in the light from the window the grey turns almost silver.
Mrs Adair keeps hens behind the chapel and has never liked questions, so you bring her a loaf from the bakery and stand in her yard while she turns it over in her floury hands. She does not mention Tom. She says gulls don't come inland in April unless something has frightened them off the water, and that the feather is from a wood pigeon, not a gull, and that you would have known the difference if you had ever looked up. Then she points with the loaf towards the harbour road.
You walk down past the boarded chandlery and the empty net lofts. On the wall of the last one, someone has chalked a small bird with its wing spread wide, and beneath it, in the same careful pencil as the envelope, a date that is three days away.
