Mickey Mouse outline on inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a Mickey Mouse head sits on the inner wrist, shown as a pale, thin line against the skin. The linework is simple and unshaded, and the fingers and palm are visible above it. The photograph is black and white, so no colour is shown, and the dark background frames the hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The clerk at Sennet Dock turned my manifest over twice before she looked up. "Three circles," she said, tapping the lid of the crate. "Stamped on ration seed. What is it supposed to be?" I told her it was a mouse, the old kind with round ears that never grew up. She said the Ring had banned rodent imagery after the grain blight, and I said it was not a rodent, it was a shorthand, and she made me stand behind the yellow line while she sent for her supervisor.

The stencil had come from the archive on Halden Ring, cut by a retired seal-maker named Oduya who swore she had copied it off a cracked screen the year before the last shuttle left for Earth. She said nobody on the old stations had agreed on a god, a flag or a national anthem, but everyone could draw those three circles in two strokes and recognise them at a glance. A face you could draw that quickly, she said, was a face you could always find again. I had thought that was sentimental until I watched her ink a hundred crates in an afternoon, grinning the whole time.

The supervisor arrived with a cup of cold tea and a face like a shut hatch. She looked at the stamp for a long moment, then laughed so hard she had to put the cup down. Her father had stamped the same shapes on his lunchbox, she said, and her mother had scratched them onto the airlock wheel so the children could find it in the dark. She waved the crate through without another word.

I watched the forklift take it away. On my own palm the ink from the stencil had come off in a faint grey ring, and I rubbed it with my thumb until only the outline was left, pale as frost, two round ears and a round head looking up at the ceiling as if it had been waiting for someone to notice.
