White rabbit with pocket watch in a diamond
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A white rabbit with a long ear and a pocket watch on a chain is set inside a tall diamond outline. The rabbit's face and fur are rendered in fine stippled dots, with a solid black background filling the diamond around it. Small playing cards appear at the lower edge of the design, and the tattoo is shown in black and grey on pale skin against a dark backdrop.

Right, sit down on that step, the one with the gum on it, and don't touch the lift doors, they've got a temper. Now. Old Mr Hollis on the ninth floor had a rabbit, or the rabbit had him, depending on who you asked. White as a letter, with one ear that stood up like it was listening for the post and one that flopped over the side of its head as if it had given up. Every morning at seven it checked the watch on its chain, pulled a card from its waistcoat, and said the same thing: late, late, late.

Hollis worked nights at the bakery by the canal and never once got home before the rabbit had already been out. Nobody saw it go. The lift kept stopping at floors it had no business stopping at, and cards kept turning up in the stairwell bins, each one with a small black diamond on its back, inked so finely you had to hold it to the strip light to see the dots.
Then one February the watch stopped at ten past four and the rabbit didn't come down. Hollis climbed up with a torch and found the door to flat nine standing open, the chain hanging loose, and on the mat a single card face up. It was the queen of hearts, with a tiny clock drawn on her forehead in pencil. He picked it up, and the card was warm, the way a pocket watch is warm when it has been in someone's hand all day.
So if you're ever on these stairs at ten past four, and you hear something tapping its way down past the bins, don't look. Just let it pass. It's only trying to get to the bakery before the bread goes cold.
