Geometric wolf head on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head is built from angular, faceted panels with a dotted stippling effect used for shading on the muzzle and cheeks. The eyes, nose and outline are drawn in solid black linework, and the cheek and ear panels are shaded with lighter and darker dots. The tattoo is centred on the arm, with a dark fabric background on the left and two hands with brown henna patterns framing the lower part of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came down to Callow Bridge the winter the river froze to the stones. Nobody could say which hill it had walked from. It stood at the edge of the square before the bakery lit its ovens, and it was built entirely of angles: slate-grey planes folded over one another like the pages of a letter, every cheek and brow a separate shard. Where its muzzle should have been soft, there was only a spatter of small dots, as if someone had pressed a pen into frost.

Mrs Ellery at the post office said it had come for the boy who stole her apples in October. Tom Hale, who was nine and had stolen the apples, said it had come for nobody at all. Still, when he crossed the square with a loaf under his coat, the wolf turned its head and looked at him, and its eyes were not wild. They were level and patient, the way his grandfather looked at a piece of wood before deciding where to cut.

Each morning after that the wolf was there, and each morning the town walked around it. Tom began leaving the heel of his bread on the cobbles. In February the bread was gone, and in its place lay a flat stone folded to a point, sharp along one edge, which Tom kept in his pocket until the thaw. When the river ran again the wolf had gone, and the stone had a small black nose drawn on it in soot, as neat as anything his grandfather ever carved.
