Filigree four-leaf clover tattoo on skin
Dotwork · Colour · Photo
A four-leaf clover with a long curling stem is tattooed on pale skin. Each leaf is filled with ornate scrolls and swirls, and the outline and details are built from fine stippled dots. The ink is mainly gold and tan with silver-grey highlights, and the design sits centrally in a close, tightly cropped frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Halloran wanted her clover finished before the Feast of St Patrick, and she wanted it in gold, not silver, because she said silver tarnished on a woman who had been widowed twice. Tobias Crane, eleven months into his apprenticeship above a pawnbroker in Hatton Garden, had drawn the leaves three times already. Each time the scrolls came out heavy as pram handles, and Master Fenwick flicked the sheets onto the coal scuttle without looking up from his loupe.

Tobias did not sleep much that week. He sat at the bench after the others had gone, the gas turned low, with a bundle of fine gold wire and a pricker no thicker than a hatpin. The old pattern books said filigree could be built from beads, so he stopped trying to draw a line and began placing dots instead, one after another, each the size of a poppy seed, until the leaves seemed to breathe in and out under the lamp.
On the fourth night he set the last dot of the fourth leaf and found his hand shaking, though not from cold. He had been counting dots the way his gran counted stitches on the lace she made in Limerick, under her breath, always one more than she needed, just in case. He had never told Fenwick about her. He had not told anyone the clover was meant for a man who did not come home from the Somme.
Fenwick found the sheet in the morning and held it to the window for a long while. He said nothing. He wrapped the brooch himself, and at the edge of the card, where the stem curled out past the paper, he left it running off the page like something that had decided to go on alone.
