Filigree Mickey Mouse head silhouette

Black and grey · Photo

A solid black outline forms a Mickey Mouse head silhouette, with the two round ears and the larger face. Inside, fine black scrolls and swirls curl around a central heart and a small solid black heart at the base, with the lighter skin showing between the lines. The design is in black ink only, centred on a plain patch of skin with a small mole near the lower left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wire had come out of the crucible grey and stiff, and Marta Voss spent three nights coaxing it into curls for her sister's wedding. Her father had drawn the pattern on a slate: two round ears, a broad face, and inside it a heart that a child could have pointed at from across the square.

On the eve of the wedding the workshop mice got into the box of scrolls. Her father found both ears chewed to nothing, only the black pitch outline left, and a small grey mouse sitting on the bench washing its face as if it had done nothing wrong. 'You are a guest,' Marta told it. 'Guests bring something.'

She had no time to draw the face again. Instead she bent the spirals that were left around the hole, letting each curl run into the next the way the river runs round a stone, until the middle looked as though it had been meant that way. At the base she pressed a last drop of pitch into a tiny heart, the only solid thing in the whole design, and filed it flat.

At the wedding the bride's mother turned the shield over in her hands and laughed until she had to sit down. 'Every house has a thief,' she said, 'and every thief leaves a gap. Keep the gap and the marriage will hold.' Her sister wore the silver on a ribbon all her life, and when people asked about the black heart at its foot, she said only that a mouse had once been invited.
