Mickey Mouse balloon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a Mickey Mouse head shape, with a balloon string drawn as a single thin line curling down and ending in a loop. The linework is thin and slightly sketchy, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner wrist against plain pale skin, with a mustard-coloured sleeve cuff visible at the bottom of the frame.

Hettie had logged eleven umbrellas and a dentures case before the balloon came in through the lost property hatch, bobbing against the ceiling tiles as if it had a complaint. It was inked in bold black, its round ears pinched tight, and its string had been tied off in a neat curl that nobody on the pier seemed able to undo.

'Found it on the groyne,' said the lad who brought it, shrugging. 'Thought someone might want it back.'
She wrote the tag in capitals: BALLOON, ONE, ODD. Under REMARKS she put the time, twenty to six, the tide coming in, and a line she felt silly writing: looks like it's still waiting for someone to tell it where to go. Nobody claimed it that week. Gulls tested the window. On Friday a woman with a pushchair asked whether it had come from the amusements, and Hettie said she didn't think so, since the amusements hadn't sold anything shaped like that since the fire. The woman laughed and said her father used to buy them for her every August, all round ears and no sense of direction.
On Saturday Hettie untied the curl, gave the string one slow pull, and let the balloon out through the hatch into a wind that smelled of salt and frying onions. She watched it climb over the Ferris wheel, the loop trailing behind like a question mark, until it was only a dot against the gulls. Then she opened the book and wrote: RETURNED TO OWNER, PROBABLY.
