Mickey Mouse balloons on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two Mickey Mouse head shaped balloons joined by thin black strings that trail down and curl at the ends. The left balloon is filled with yellow and the right one with dark navy blue, both edged in bold black outlines. The design sits centrally on smooth skin of the inner wrist, with a speckled grey surface visible at the edges of the frame.

The gala stall at the top of Hetton Lane sells balloons for tuppence, and by eleven the sky above the pit-head is strung with them. You choose the two with rounded ears because the lad with the cash tin swears they are the last of a batch from Newcastle. The yellow one is for Nell, who has been promised her dad will be up from the night shift in time for the brass band. The navy one is for you, though you tell yourself it is only for holding.

Nell takes both strings along the rope fence, humming the hymn the band keeps getting wrong. Twice the navy balloon tugs loose and you lunge for it, catching the thin black line where it curls at the end. The wind comes off the slag heap smelling of wet ash, and the men in the queue for the baths stand with their lunch tins under their arms, watching the cage like it owes them money.
When the bell goes, Nell lets go of the yellow one to run, and it sails straight up, bumping against the winding wheel before climbing past the headframe. The first man out of the cage is not her father, and she stops, small and sure, while the band starts up without him.
You look up and find the navy balloon still tethered to your wrist, its string gone slack. You wind it twice round your fingers and keep your eyes on the gap in the clouds where the yellow one went, and you wait.
