Outline Mickey Mouse head with script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline of a Mickey Mouse head sits on the upper back near the neck, with the word dream in cursive script running along the inside of the lower curve. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on the skin. The tattoo is centred in the frame against plain, lightly lit skin, with the top of the shoulders and some hair visible at the edges.

Ivy had the ladder against the back wall of the Pavilion Ballroom before the band had finished tuning, and Mr Harker stood below with his hands in his cardigan pockets, telling her it had to be quick. The new owners wanted the place bright for the autumn season. "Something cheerful," he said. "Two circles and a face. Anyone can do it."

She did not argue. She drew the big round ears first with a carpenter's pencil, one circle and then its twin, then the wide cheek below them, the line so fine it barely caught the light from the high windows. She used no paint, only a brush of black enamel thinned with turps, and she kept each stroke single so nothing looked heavy. Along the lower curve she wrote dream in joined-up letters, the way her mother had taught her to write on the backs of envelopes.

Dancers came in the afternoon to watch. A girl in a green coat said it looked like a face that had never been told bad news. An old drummer said it reminded him of the hall before the war, when the floor was sprung and a tin sign of the same shape hung above the bar. Ivy kept her eyes on the pencil marks and said nothing.

The next morning the whitewash crew came with rollers. Harker stood at the door while they covered the wall, and Ivy found she did not mind. Under the wet paint, she knew, the outline would stay put for a good while, a faint grey ghost of two ears and one word still running along the bottom, waiting for someone to look up.
