Three stacked triangles on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three forearms each show a column of three small triangles, with a mix of outlined and solid filled shapes. The linework is thin and clean, and some of the filled triangles show soft grey shading. The ink is black and grey against pale skin on a dark background, with the three arms placed side by side.

Harriet had counted the triangles three times before she trusted the arithmetic. Four lines of chalk on the gatepost at Low Scarth, and beneath them the same stacked shapes Dad had drawn on the back of the feed bill, outlined where the field was clear and filled where the stock had gone through. Nobody in the village could read them except the three of us, and that was the point.

The arrangement mattered more than the marks. Top down, empty over solid over empty meant the ewes were in the top meadow, behind the beck. Solid at the top with two hollows beneath meant the lambing shed was locked and the key was under the water butt. Dad had invented the code the winter the postman started steaming open letters, and he had made us learn it like catechism, one column each, so that no single person could ever send a message whole.
Now Dad was in the infirmary at Hexham and the snow had come early. On the third morning Harriet walked the fence line with the lamp and found a new column at the gate, the middle one drawn in grey pencil and half rubbed away by sleet. Solid at the middle, outlined beneath it. It was Peg's column, and it said the hollow place by the wall had gone under drift.
She went out with the spade before the light came up, counting the posts as she passed them, three to a fence and never once the same.
